An Inspector Calls was written by JB Priestley in 1945 and is probably his most well known play out of the twenty five he has written. It is set in Brumley, an industrial city in the North Midlands, in the spring of 1912 and tells the story of one night in a family’s life, when an engagement celebration is turned into a suicide investigation by the sudden appearance of Inspector Goole. He begins making enquiries about a young woman who used to work for Mr Birling who recently committed suicide. The time in which the play is set is crucial to the story and anyone performing the play should know of the ironies in the script and the social and historical background of the time. During 1912 when the play was set the class system governed how certain people would live and how others were treated. There was a huge divide and the classes rarely if ever mixed. The upper class consisting of the aristocracy looked down on just about everyone and owned most of the land. The middle class, like the Birlings was made up of ‘self made’ families. They were usually the owners of the factories ......
