DECEMBER 2004 TSUNAMI IN THE INDIAN OCEAN Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Introduction/Abstract: Up until a few years ago the phenomena known as the tsunami was not on the minds of most of the world’s population. But December 26, 2004 changed all of that. An earthquake that reached a magnitude of 9.3 struck off the Northwest coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra (Iwan, 2006). The earthquake resulted from an intricate slip on the fault where the oceanic portion of the Indian Ocean plate slides under Sumatra, which is part of the Eurasian Plate (Funk, 2005). The earthquake distorted the ocean floor and pushed the overlying water up into a tsunami wave. The tsunami wave devastated nearby areas where the wave may have been as high as 80 feet tall and killed nearly 300,000 people from nations in the Indian Ocean region and tourists from around the world. It also affected the lives of millions of people around the world (Halif, 2007). Although people living on the coastline near the epicenter of the earthquake had little time or warning of the approaching tsunami, those living farther away along the coasts of Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, and East Africa ......
