In a world where music and culture are so closely intertwined it is hard to imagine a time of little or no musical writings. A Spanish theologian during the Seventh century believed in order to transmit musical sounds it had to be oral, music could not be properly notated (Slonimsky, 1997). In Isidores work he said [u]nless sounds are remembered by man, they perish, for they can not be written down (Arnold, 1983, p. 1248). This is not the case today. In our society we have musical scores, sheet music to practically any song, and electronic machines that are able to write music as it is played. But how did we arrive with this musical language? Today, the Western Measural Notation is the most widely used form of musical writing (Yudkin, 2002).
At the end of the first millennium in Greece a musical system began to develop using neumes, a Greek word for nod, sign or signal (Arnold, 1983).
