Ethical Analysis: 2006 Duke Lacrosse Case In March 2006 a stripper hired to perform at a Duke University’s men’s lacrosse team party accused three of the Duke Lacrosse players of raping her at a party held earlier in the month (Sherwell, 2006). The following year of frenzied media court coverage shocked the American public and became an ethical talking point for a majority of the country’s news outlets. The situation escalated to a point where the media and activist groups played key roles in the investigation, overweighing the plaintiff and defendant’s voice at times. Numerous ethical decisions were handled poorly, and at times, in a tasteless manor by the various parties of the investigation. While none were more nefarious than Michael Nifong, the Durham District Attorney who purposefully rushed to accuse the Duke athletes for matters of self interest, justice was served at the end of a year long struggle as he was disbarred from the state of North Carolina on numerous ethics charges (Setrakian & Francescani, 2007).
