Daisy Miller: Exposing the Quickness With Which We Judge Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
In having his audience respond to stereotypical characters, Henry James uses Daisy Miller to first create a critical attitude toward the main character, and to then point out the snobbery he has instilled in his readers in doing so. Initially the story is presented as a comedy of manners, but it takes a dark turn in the death of the innocent Daisy, illustrating the shameful waste that can be created by strict adherence to convention. The American expatriates James portrays are so concerned with keeping up their civilized appearances that they shun Daisy for her willful independence. Excluded from the community, Daisy has no other option but to keep to her own path. James uses her as a symbol of personal strength and autonomy, and her death casts a somber shadow on the self-worship of the other Americans as well as the readersÂ’ critical attitudes.
