Conventions of Opposition - James Joyce Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

James Joyce, born in Dublin, Ireland, wrote a series of stories entitled Dubliners in 1905. The collection, not published until 1914, consists of fifteen stories tied together by the themes of paralysis and the consistent poverty-stricken environment of Ireland. He utilized his revolutionary style to transition the writings of the time from symbolism, through modernism, to postmodernism (Fargnoli 16). Despite Joyce’s struggle to get Dubliners published, it is recognized as one of the most accurate depictions of Dublin in the late 19th century. Throughout Joyce’s childhood he was surrounded by the Catholic religion, rejecting his religious faith not far into adulthood (Kelly 56). Because of his almost fanatic early faith in Catholicism, Joyce was very familiar with religious symbols and references in the Bible and utilized his knowledge in “Araby,” the third story in Joyce’s Dubliners. The symbolic meaning of how Christian references are associated with the bazaar, the girl (Mangan’s sister), and the light can be found within the lines of Joyce’s story “Araby”. ......
