Hunger as Ideology--Interacting with the Text “And I need to scarf this burger, beef, bacon, cheddar, jalapeno, good thing down!” This is an excerpt taken from the Texas Double Whopper ad, a new, deluxe burger at Burger King. Sounds tempting, right? It has basically all the components a burger-lover could ask for. But wait? The following line in this catchy jingle is “I AM MAN!” and the slogan for the product is “Eat like a man, man”. On top of that, the entire commercial focuses on a man’s hearty appetite and it’s need for fulfillment in comparison to “chick food”. So, what does this mean? Can a woman indulge herself into a lavish, plentiful meal without it being considered manly? According to advertisements and the presentations by mass media today a woman treating herself to a large meal is seen as manly. There is man food and chick food, and crossing these barriers is irregular. These ideas manifest themselves into worldwide struggles for many women.
