There are some people in the world who believe in living a successful life, some seek for glory but can only find failure and some live a life with no great expectation. He never expected much is a conversational poem between Hardy and his ¡¥life¡¦ and unclose his attitude to life as the alternative title is A consideration on my eight-sixth birthday. In Hardy's early life he believed he was writing poetry with little recognition, perhaps this is the why he believes he should never be expecting much. Everyone can live the way they want to be. Nevertheless, Hardy¡¦s attitude to life exhibited in He never expected much should not be disregarded in any aspect.
The poem contains three stanzas. Each stanza is comprised of eight lines. The rhyme scheme is strictly constructed with an AAABCCCB pattern. The stern structure could have reflects the poet¡¦s straight life which he lives according to his guide from the world. The poem has a tight configuration of beats in each stanza; the beats are (8, 4, 8, 6) in the first four lines and 6 beats in the last line of every stanza. There......
