Barbie: A Fifty Year Appraisal In the year 1958 Barbie Millicent Roberts was brought into the world. At eleven and a half inches tall and eleven ounces in weight, no one knew the reflection of U.S. culture and impact on behavior of women she would grow to become. As Barbie nears her fiftieth birthday she still tops the must have toy list, but why is it that this blonde haired bombshell has so much power? The answer is uncertain, but a better understanding can be gained through understanding Barbie’s past. The idea for Barbie is credited to Ruth and Elliot Handler, but the idea was not original; she was modeled after the German doll Lilli. Erica Wolf, who has conducted many studies on entrepreneurship, created the following explanation: Lilli began as a cartoon character in a daily newspaper called the Bild-Zeitung (BillyBoy 19). This character, known for her large breasts and sexy clothing, was created for adult entertainment "a symbol of sex and pornography for the men of Germany" (Johnson "History"). Handler discovered Lilli while shopping in Switzerland and brought the doll ......
