Sonny’s Blues Analysis James Baldwin shows the theme of suffering, in “Sonny’s Blues” through point of view, characterization, setting, and plot. “Sonny’s Blues” is written in first-person point of view because the narrator is the only person, besides his mother, to know the truth about his uncle and how his death affected their father. The story simply would not be the same if it was written from any other perspective. A story is not a story without interesting and diverse characters. In “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin creates a nameless narrator who is the brother to Sonny, a man who is arrested for the use and selling of heroin, who is a high school algebra teacher. Along the way, the narrator learns a lot from a friend of Sonny, but this is not the only person the narrator talks to. “A great block of ice got settled in my belly and kept melting there slowly all day long…”(Baldwin 277) gives the reader an incite into how the narrator is feeling by using a block of ice as a metaphor for fear. The author uses flashback within the story to emphasize the relations......
