Kenneth Rexroth has given in his work exactly what he sought in life: A sense of compassionate moral center from which the possibility of ultimate awakening may be realized. Many, such as myself, Sam Himell, believe in this statement. Rexroth lives on in his poems as a great, wise man, polished by great loss and small glory. Not only was Rexroth a poet but also a revolutionary activist, translator, essayist and playwright. Rexroth mainly focused on politics, pacifism, erotic love, the environment, and Asian and Western traditions. Kenneth Charles Marion Rexroth was born December 22, 1905 to Charles and Delia Rexroth. Throughout his childhood he was heavily burdened by his father’s alcoholism and his mother’s chronic illness. Though he had a heavy burden to bare at such a young age, Rexroth was an intelligent child. His mother home schooled him and by age four he was reading extensively. Tragically when Rexroth was only eleven years old his mother died and just tow short years later his father passed away as well.
