The Psychoanalysis of Holden Caulfield The Catcher and the Rye is a novel about a young adolescent, Holden Caulfield, who is expressing his dissatisfaction with the world in many ways that adolescents do today. Holden is smart, but talks in a cynical tone. Although Holden never tells the reader that he longs to live in a perfect world his actions speak for himself. Holden Caulfield is a representative of what many adolescents are feeling in today’s society in ways of sexual frustration and pressure to succeed. Holden’s sarcasm is a tool to protect himself from getting hurt by the outside world, which many adolescents do today to rebel. Holden’s sexuality plays an important role in how he thinks about certain things. Sexual desire often motivates Holden’s decisions. Adolescence is like standing on the threshold of becoming an adult, adolescents are self conscious of what others think and can become unhappy with themselves when they think that someone around them is better.
