How are tension and suspense built up in ‘The Red Room’ by H.G Wells? I am writing an essay based on the short story ‘The Red Room’ written by H.G Wells 1896. I will try and explain how the tension and suspense is built up in the story. It is filled with tension and suspense which is sustained through out. About the narrator searching to confirm the rumours of the haunted room, only to find that it is fear haunting the room. H.G Wells immediately creates an atmosphere of tension from the start of 'The Red Room' when he introduces the 'man with the withered arm'. This grotesque description of the custodians features, with having no name given to him, helps create this air of mystery and suspense. However the man with the withered arm is not the only custodian that creates tension and suspense, ‘the old women’ does ‘(“This night of all nights!” said the old woman.)’ it makes you think that there is something special about that particualar nigh maybe an anniversairy of something. The term 'tangible ghost' helps create suspense too, as you normally link the term 'ghost'......
