Mary Rowlandson and the Puritan Tenets In Mary Rowland’s, The Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, many Puritan beliefs, also called tenets, are vividly illustrated. As a matter of fact, several scholars today revere Rowlandson’s work as one of the most detailed depictions of Puritan beliefs. Three specific tenets held by the Puritans were addressed frequently by Rowlandson throughout her narrative. The first is Cosmic Drama, or the belief that there is a real war happening on Earth between the armies of good and evil for domination over the world. The Native Americans are the evil, devil’s army and the Puritans being God’s chosen warriors in His army of good. Next is the tenet of Satan on Earth, which is the belief that the Indians are the devil’s army placed here on Earth to conquer the Puritans (God’s army). Finally, the third tenet, and probably the most expressed in Rowlandson’s diary, is God’s constant intervention in the lives of the individuals and the community.
