American Dream Paper- The Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The “American Dream” is conceived by most people as the desire for prosperity, strong family life, and success. The question is, is this dream attainable? And if so, are the consequences and suffering along the way equal to the fulfillment of reaching this goal? Or is the strife and loss of friendships more than it’s worth? In both the novels Of Mice and Men and The Great Gatsby, the authors Steinbeck and Fitzgerald depict characters whose “American Dream” ultimately leads them to failure and destruction, because they have to pay the highest price of death before they realize that their dream is unrealistic. In Of Mice and Men George and Lennie, an unlikely pair, are traveling ranch hands. Lennie is a mentally challenged, large man, while George is smaller, serious, and sassy. George’s American Dream is to quit having to roam around from ranch to ranch. They had to move because Lennie accidentally got into trouble in their last town.
