Forcible rape is defined by the Department of Justice as the carnal knowledge of a male or female against their will. Assaults or attempts to commit rape by force or threat of force are also included. However, statutory rape (without force) and other sex offenses are excluded (Department of Justice, 2006). Statistics for this particular offense vary a great deal from state to state or region to region. Statistics show that in the United States, 1.3 women are raped every minute. That results in 78 rapes each hour, 1872 rapes each day, 56160 rapes each month and 683,280 rapes each year (Rape Statistics, 2007). These investigations submitted include the comparison and contrast of statistics pertaining to forcible rape in Bay City, Michigan and Atlanta, Georgia, ranging from 2004 to 2006. Some cultures in the United States are more accepting of this act than others, but then again only 16% of rape cases are ever reported so exact statistics are very hard to come by.
