Machiavelli's Mirror of Princes Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Machiavelli provided a blue print for republicanism far more compelling than earlier writers who stuck to the premise that rulers and their subjects should be governed by the precepts of Christianity. One of the reasons that Machiavelli proposed a republic devoid of religious rule was due to his dissatisfaction with the Catholic Church which had become in his opinion immoral. The Mirror of Princes genre, which had started about 500 years before Machiavellis time, offered little mention of autocratic rule, and none of the earlier writings suggested any guidelines for that type of leadership.
What was compelling about Machiavellis writings is his pragmatic view of how man evolved, what man represented and what qualities made for a good leader of men. Machiavelli was a great student of the classics, but he considered their views naive; take Aristotle for example, whos idea of a political leader would be someone charitable beyond all costs; Machiavelli thought that was a nice concept, but not a quality of effective leadership.
