This story takes place in 1958 in California. My grandma was 16 at the time ,and her best friend lived in a house that was three doors down from my grandmas grandfathers house. Her grandfather passed away in the early 50s ,and the house was vacant for many years. My grandmas grandfather had built his house in an unincorporated area of the village. It was a two to three acre lot with wooded areas.
My grandmas friend Jim, who later became her brother in-law, had spent a lot of time in the vacant house for about two years. While Jims parents both worked, Grandma and he watched over his younger brothers. They always hung out with the kids around the block and played in a garage band.
My grandma said that ,The house had always been friendly to her. She always felt calm when she went upstairs to Jims younger brother, Bobs room. There were a few times that she would come to the house and wait for Jim to get home. The house was empty ,and everybody always kept their doors unlocked. She would always go up to Bobs room and read ......
