King Oedipus whilst being a play over 2000 years old can still hold relevance to a modern audience, because many of the themes and aspects to the plot line were not just trends of the time period. The question that Oedipus comes across in this play is whether he is destined to fulfill his fate or can he change his life’s course. This question still consumes people in our modern society; it is presented intriguingly in the play because we know of Oedipus’ fate, as the original audience did and we watch as his attempt to avoid his destiny draws him straight to it. Contemporary society is still intrigued by whether man can escape seemingly predetermined outcomes such as genetics or cultural and social backgrounds. The Greek tragedy, King Oedipus by Sophocles was written between 441- 427 BC and first preformed in 428 BC in the City Dionysius festival which was the festival to celebrate Dionysus, the god of festivity. This festival started in villages and gradually moved into cities, where almost all the people of Athens would gather to watch a series of plays over three days. It ......
