Langston Hughes: Cross Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Diction is a powerful literary device that takes us into the mind of the poet or speaker. Authors may use it to slyly reveal truths about the characters. In the poem “Cross” Langston Hughes utilizes this device to contradict the speaker’s professed ambiguity. Though the son claims to be in a dilemma about his heritage, it is evident that he has chosen his Black heritage over his Caucasian. The speaker’s father is “a white old man” and his “old mother’s black” (1 and 2). The son’s reference to his father as “a white old man” creates distances between them (1). They do not have a strong connection and the son has a loss of respect, consequently referring to him as “a white old man” instead of father (1). He ignores the blood relation them two share, yet clearly acknowledges this kinship with his mother. The acknowledgment of their kinship bonds the mother and son closer. He accepts her as his parent, and a part of who he is. The speaker enters a state of guilt for cursing his parents.
