Have you ever wondered how one of the most famous and mysterious ruins known as Stonehenge was built. For over 800 years scientists have been fascinated by this stone monument, which have brought up many questions. Questions such as, who built Stonehenge. The people who built this ancient megalith had to be technologically advanced to accomplish such great feats. Researchers believed Stonehenge was built by three separate cultures, the Windmill Hill, Beaker, and Wessex peoples.
The name Stonehenge came from the Saxons, which was originally called Stanhenge. Stan is old English for stone and, henge means to hang. This alone brought up many theories on why Stonehenge was built. Many of these theories were thought to be like the medieval gallows. Some theorists speculate that ancient civilizations used Stonehenge to hang criminals, hence the name. While other scientists believe Stonehenge was built for both astrological and ceremonial purposes over a period of more than five hundred years.
