What does it mean for something to be sacred? In the simplest sense, society uses the word religiously to represent something that is holy, something that should never be offended. Yet, this does not seem to encompass everything which can be meant by the word. For example, an atheist who disdains religion does not forsake the ability to consider something sacred. He, as a human being, can still believe that some things are sacred. So, sacredness is the quality of an act or item which has an expected usage. It is a definition of right and wrong within a society. Any contract or item can be labeled in this way, whether taught by religion or expected from familiar practice. For the purposes of this paper, examples will be taken from common American life and contrasts will be made against other societies.
