Romanticism and Neoclassicism and the Relationship Between God and Man In the 17th century the growth of science and the advancement of knowledge began to permeate all areas of thought. “Scientific discovery and exploration also affected religious attitudes” (Norton C 2063). Unlike some factions of today’s society that see scientific advancement as evidence to refute the existence of God, 17th and 18th century philosophers viewed science not only as a refutation of God’s existence, but also as an endorsement of the religious belief in the divine and proof of an ordered creation. Science was viewed as an “enlightenment”; an understanding of the fundamental laws of the universe. During the period of Neoclassicism (Neoclassicism dominated English literature form the Restoration in 1660 until the end of the eighteenth century, when the publication of Lyrical Ballads (1798) by Wordsworth and Coleridge marked the full emergence of Romanticism) poetry was considered an art whose object was to imitate nature and to teach.
