Comparing Hammurabis Code and Judaic Law Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Hammurabi’s Code and the Ten Commandments are both ancient law codes that dictated the behavior and functioning of their respective societies. Hammurabi’s Code succeeded in providing a comprehensive state-law system for Babylonia while the Ten Commandments became the backbone for Judaic law. There are many similarities between these two law systems, yet ultimately their differences prove most significant when viewing each society from a greater historical perspective. Among the similarities between Hammurabi’s code and Judaic law are lex talionis, respect for parents, and respect for property. Lex talions is exemplified by laws 196 and 197 in Hammurabi’s Code. Law 196 states, “If a man put out the eye of another man, his eye shall be put out.” Law 197 states, “If he break another man’s bone, his bone shall be broken.” In nearly identical accordance, Chapter 21 sections 23, 24, and 25 of Judaic law from the book of Exodus state, “...then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, strip for......
