Veal: The Harsh Reality Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Have you ever eaten veal? Do you know what veal is? Veal is the flesh of a baby cow. Calves that are intended to be slaughtered have hard lives from the day they are born to the day they are butchered. At birth they are separated from their mothers and put into solitary confinement. Once ready, about 14-16 weeks after birth, the calves are slaughtered and butchered. It is important to know about the treatment of baby cows, so we can stop this horrible and inhumane treatment of thousands of innocent animals. Only the male calves are taken from their mothers and put into confinement. The prison they are forced to live in, called a veal crate, is a wooden device that restrains the calf from any major movement. The veal crate is so small that the calves don’t have any room to turn around, lie down, or stretch at all. Occasionally the calves will also be chained by the neck in order to restrain them even more. Keeping the calves in confinement is done so that they don’t have the opportunity to develop muscles. This is what causes their meat to stay tender. ......
