Salem Grudges Arthur Miller’s magnificent play, The Crucible was written after a witch hunt known as McCarthyism. Set in Salem, Massachusetts in the late 1600’s, a town where many were accused of witchcraft and many innocent lives were taken because of the confusion. Some of the town girls were found dancing around a kettle in the forest, which causes tons of lies and the blame on others just to sneak themselves out of trouble. The girls weren’t actually conjuring spirits just trying to cast spells for some of the town’s boys to like them, but Abigail took it too far when she drank the bird’s blood. In 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy of West Virginia started to accuse people in the government of being Communists; this was much like the fear that broke out in Salem once people were accused of witchcraft. In The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, grudges and personal rivalries arise after the town girls are found by Reverend Parris dancing around a kettle in the forest.
