Bill Of Rights Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Just like with the Declaration of Independence, writing the Bill of Rights was a pivical moment. The idea of adding a Bill of Rights to the Constitution was initially controversial. There were two opposing sides: the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. The Federalists were in favor of the Constitution and a system of national government with “great energy, stability, and efficiency” (Meltzer 39). They felt that a nation stretched over such a large territory might lead to chaos and disorder, so they believed that a “stronger and tighter control” was the best suited (Meltzer 39). The Federalists represented wealthy property owners and were supported by church and religious leaders as well as newspaper editors (Weidner 29). They were trying to stay away from any one group getting complete control over the government. So they argued that the separation of powers amongst the three branches along with the division of national and state powers would assure that there would be at no point complete control over the government (Isler 21).
