The Leader Behind the Scandal: Arnold Gandil
The 1919 World Series match up was between Chicago White Sox and the
Cincinnati Reds. Back in 1919 the World Series format was a nine game series, unlike
today the series is seven games. The events of this World Series come along with the
Black Sox Scandal, when a eight members from the White Sox organization agreed with
some gamblers throw away the World Series.
The conspiracy consisted of the smart one of the White Sox, first baseman,
Arnold Chick Gandil and Joseph Sullivan, who was a professional gambler and a
friend of Gandils. A gangster from New York known as Arnold Rothstein supplied the
connections that were needed in order for the operation to be processed. Former
featherweight boxing champion, Abe Attell supplied the money that the White Sox
wanted. Sullivan made certain with Gandil that $100,000 would be paid to the players.
Gandil was also in charge of recruiting and paying the players that were in involved in
the deal.
