Plato on Liberty : An Analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Western civilizations we tend to associate liberty and freedom with a just society but what would happen to a society if liberty and freedom were taken to their extreme limits and people and states acted without limitations, controls or rules? In The Republic, Plato argues that liberty can only lead to one conclusion, a loss of security, no assurance for the future and then finally chaos. Good leaders would be replaced with tyrants and freedom and happiness would be replaced with tyranny, the worst of all states. Instead, Plato argues in his book, The Republic, that in order to achieve the perfect society, personal liberties must be put aside in favour of a common good that in turn would provide a better life for all members of the society. Plato believed in a form of monarchy, a class structure that would include a philosopher king who would be carefully selected and who might only come along every few generations. He would be the head of a ruling class. He would be capable of obtaining and maintaining ultimate control over the collective through the value and prac......
