John Dalton Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

John Dalton (a British chemist and physicist) was born on September 6, 1766, in Eaglesfield, Cumberland County, England. He was son of a weaver, received education from his father and at a Quaker school in his local town. He started teaching at the age of twelve at a village school. Then he moved to Kendal, where he conducted a school with his cousin and his elder brother. After ten years of teaching in Kendal, he went to Manchester in 1793 and continued teaching. In Manchester, he joined the Manchester Literary and philosophical society which provided him a well equipped environment and laboratory. On July 27, 1844, he died in Manchester at the age of seventy-eight. When Dalton was studying meteorology, he found patterns in experimental data n lead him from a problem in meteorology to the idea of atoms as original element of matter. Dalton’s most important contribution to science was this theory which he first developed in 1803, that matter is form by atoms of differing weights and combines in simple ratios of weight.
