Rhe Duchess in The Duchess of Malfi Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The chief tragic protagonist, the Duchess demonstrates many strong personal traits throughtout the play, including; courage, independence, intelligence, wit and ambition. In a once male-dominated society, these character traits would be seen as a threat, although in todays audience she would be much admired. Despite all her good traits, this hero still has significent flaws. She shows herself as a poor judge of character; once about her brothers “time will easily scatter the tempest” and then with Bosola, who tricks her into telling him her secrets. Dismissing this potential for evil results in a tragic end for the Duchess. Although the protagonist she still cannot overcome her brothers. This may be because of her boldness and her determination “The misery of us that are born great,/ we are forced to woo because none dare woo us” which in the end brought her to her death. She refuses to be subservient to men, and ignores her brothers commands, so it could be argued that she had this fate because she was too bold for the society i......
