Socrates and Confucius Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Socrates (469-399BC) and Confucius (551-479BC) are two of the most important thinkers in History. They have a huge impact on eastern and western culture. People tend to say that ‘Socrates is the Confucius of the western world’ but in fact if you know Socrates and Confucius well enough, you will realize that these two thinkers are very different. They are different in their way of talking, teaching, and thinking. Both Socrates and Confucius devoted themselves to educating young men, but their ways of teaching are significantly different. Socrates lowers his position, and then question the other person to reach a point that the learner realizes the truth by himself. In the dialog ‘Meno’, a young man named Meno asked Socrates, if virtue can be taught. However, Socrates responds to him by asking Meno the definition of virtue. Socrates pointed out to Meno that for any issues to be discussed, first, the concept should be clear. After realizing that Meno wrongly understood virtue, instead of defining it, Socrates asked Meno more questions about simpler things, for exam......
