Socrates (469-399BC) and Confucius (551-479BC) are two of the most important thinkers in History. They have a huge impact on eastern and western culture. People tend to say that âSocrates is the Confucius of the western worldâ but in fact if you know Socrates and Confucius well enough, you will realize that these two thinkers are very different. They are different in their way of talking, teaching, and thinking.
Both Socrates and Confucius devoted themselves to educating young men, but their ways of teaching are significantly different. Socrates lowers his position, and then question the other person to reach a point that the learner realizes the truth by himself. In the dialog âMenoâ, a young man named Meno asked Socrates, if virtue can be taught. However, Socrates responds to him by asking Meno the definition of virtue. Socrates pointed out to Meno that for any issues to be discussed, first, the concept should be clear.
