U.S. and Canada Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Joel Garreau’s article, “Nine Nations of North America” and Tom McKnight’s textbook, “Regional Geography of the United States and Canada,” serve the same basic purpose, which is to regionalize the United States and Canada. However, the ways that they both achieve this goal are different. While McKnight divides the U.S. and Canada into fifteen regions, Garreau breaks down all of North America into nine major ‘nations.’ While both the McKnight textbook and the Garreau article deal with regionalization of the United States, they approach the subject in very different ways. McKnight divides the U.S. from a purely academic standpoint, one that is based on physical and economic similarities, above others. Garreau looks at these aspects as well, but he also recognizes that people and politics are also important in defining a region. For example, Garreau critiques the “legendary” politicians of the New England region and their high tax rates.
