In Pat Conroys first book, The Water is Wide, he writes on a universal theme: a young idealistic man sets out to change the world, and runs into obstacles larger than he expected. The book is based on Conroys real life experiences of teaching on Daufuskie Island (called Wamacraw Island in the book) in the late 1960s. After Conroys application for the Peace Corps was turned down, he applied for a job teaching children on this isolated island. His eighteen students were from the upper elementary grades.
As he began to teach, he discovered that these students did not know what country they lived in, the name of their president, or what ocean lapped the shores of their beaches. Some children were not able to read or write, recognize the alphabet, write their name, or count to ten. None of the children could swim, even though they lived on an island. It was apparent to Conroy that his own education and training was obsolete, and he would have to change his methodology in order to teach these students.
