Emma a Tangled Web - Jane Austen’s novel Emma Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Jane Austen’s novel Emma, is about a woman who tries to help others though it often back-fires to hurt them instead of help. But as this occurs she realizes and attains her own dreams. It begins with 21 year old Emma Woodhouse and her father mourning the loss of her governess of 16 years, a dear friend, Miss Taylor. Miss Taylor has recently wed Mr. Weston and moved a mere half mile away. Emma feels as if she has lost her best friend, and is very depressed and bored by her not being there to be her constant companion; but at the same time prides her self in being the matchmaker of the entire event. Her father, on the other hand just morns the fact that there is a change that he so desperately hates. Emma has also envisioned herself never to marry as she can not imagine herself any happier than managing her father’s home, besides who would then care for her ailing father. Emma’s sadness is quickly over with the arrival of a new friend a Miss Harriet Smith. Harriet is a girl of 17 whose lineage is unknown; she is a boarder at Mrs. Goddard’s school.
