Reconstruction Post-Civil War Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
A new era was set in America after the North had taken the upper hand in the Civil War. How was the federal government going to readmit the southern states that became disloyal and seceded from the United States? Radical Republicans wanted the south to face serious punishments for the crimes it committed. However, after Lincolns assassination Democrats wanted to follow his plan to have a lenient treatment of the south starting with his intern Andrew Johnson. A more important question was how the newly freed blacks were going to be taken care of. Unfortunately, the blacks were given a glimmer of freedoms before having some of their liberties taken away again. All in all, the Reconstruction was a failure because although blacks were now free, they were treated almost as poorly as they were in slavery.
