Neurotransmitters Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Abstract The importance of understanding reuptake neurotransmitters and their mechanisms is essential to treating degenerative neural diseases such as Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and other depression related disorders. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are released from neurons into the synaptic cleft where they are transmitted to signals. There are three types of neurotransmitters that are located in the human body: amines, amino acids, and peptides. This paper examines the class of amines, which include popular neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. SSRIs increase the level of serotonin in the synapse so they bind to postsynaptic receptors and used to treat depression. Since SSRIs block the reuptake of serotonin into the presynaptic cell, serotonin sits in the synapse and is utilized more effectively. Dopamine is associated with the degeneration of substantia niagra cells and low amounts of dopamine that lead to Parkinson’s disease.
