I have chosen to compare “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D Salinger with Ken Kesey’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. These books both portray an ‘alternative’ or ‘minority’ outlook on society to that which is normally perceived by the majority of people. The books then question whether this is because of the nature of society or because the people telling the tales are slightly insane. Both are written in the first person narrative, with one character giving their view of unfolding events. In “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” that character is Chief Bromden, a committed psychiatric patient in a hospital, telling the story of the man McMurphy, who enters the ward and slowly begins to fight against the “Big Nurse” Ratched and tries to break the “fog” around the patients. “The Catcher in the Rye” is the story of Holden Caulfield, a 17 year old boy also speaking from an institution, telling us his tale of being kicked out of school and the events following.
