The first poem I chose to examine was Billy Collins Another Reason Why I Dont Keep a Gun in the House. In this poem Collins takes a seemingly ordinary annoyance, one that has affected probably all of us, and snowballs it into a mesh of fantasy and reality. He writes of that everyday experience, The neighbors dog will not stop barking / He is barking the same high rhythmic bark / that he barks every time they leave the house (1-3). Collins imagination allows him to deal with the problem in a non-violent manner, though, if you notice, there is a dark side of his persona that comes out in the title. That dark side is the threat of a violent reaction most likely an empty threat. But the implication of the title is that if he did have a gun, then he would be tempted to shoot the neighbors loud dog.
Instead, Collins uses his imagination as a release to quell his frustration. His imagination allows him to incorporate the aggravating dog into an otherwise peaceful night at home listening to Beethoven. [A]nd now I can see him sitting in the orchestra /
