Heart of Darkness Analysis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Heart of Darkness In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad’s description of the hellish environment of the African natives creates an image of suffering and misery distant from any desired “Paradiso.” Black versus white, night versus day, honest descriptions versus malicious insults, these opposing aspects question the argument made by Joseph Conrad in Heart of Darkness. The questions arise with the vivid imagery and heavy symbolism the author uses in the novel. The main character, Marlow, makes his journey through the “Inferno” while realizing the terrifying effects of the white race on African life. The author intends to ridicule the white race and illustrate the cruelty, greed, and heartlessness of European civilization. Although some readers, like Chinua Achebe, argue that the intention of the novel forces racism against Africa and its inhabitants, the true argument presents the tone of sarcasm and pure descriptions of Marlow's surroundings. Never does Marlow laugh or degrade the black workers; he does however describe their misery and feels sorry for the horror caused ......
