Almond Tree Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Almond Tree Jon Stallworthy based his autobiographical poem ‘The Almond Tree’ on the intense, emotionally life-changing experience of childbirth. The strong emotions involved have helped him create, what in my opinion is, an extremely well written, thought-provoking poem. In this essay I intend to examine the techniques Stallworthy uses to conveys the intensity of these emotions. The poem starts with Stallworthy driving to the hospital where his wife is giving birth to their first child. Everything is going well and Stallworthy is in an optimistic, elated mood. When he arrives at the hospital he parks beside a blossoming almond tree and enters. Stallworthy then discovers that his son has Down’s Syndrome and his world comes crashing down. The main theme in the poem is mortality- the poet’s feelings of being alive at the start and almost like a part of him is dead towards the end. At the start of ‘The Almond Tree’, Stallworthy is in an optimistic mood as he is rushing to the hospital. He is excited at the birth of his child and everything seems to be going well. This i......
