The Friar The Friar is member of the church who’s job is to preach and take care of the poor in a certain district. This Friar was jolly, merry, festive and he was mellow in what he did. He spoke very well but pretended to have a lisp. He dress in threadbear clothing to appear very poor, but when he was around others would dress in pope like clothing. He would settle disputes but for a small fee. He would “pleasantly give absolution, for a gift” (Chaucer line226). He was very cold hearted and conceded. As said in the text “He cannot weep, for all his inward smart”(Chaucer line234). He would save his sleeve for pretty girls to cry on. Which in a way is saying that he would gladly help and comfort people he felt worthy or attractive. He was suppose to be a holy man but was well known in taverns. He wanted to act Godly around the rich to receive money. Chaucer said “..he romped, Just like a puppy! He was ever so prompt..” (Chaucer lines 263-4). Which is saying he was persistent and kept coming and begging or doing what it took to get ......
