Harvey Mansfield defines âmanlinessâ as the âconfidence of manly men and their ability to commandâ which subsequently gives him âindependence from othersâ. This idea is culturally understood through tradition and subsequently, the media. Of course tradition must begin somewhere and since we live among these norms, one might say that this understanding is in fact the essence of âmanlinessâ. As we are limited by language and itâs implications, âmanlinessâ doesnât exist outside of these terms. The idea of âmanlinessâ is a socially constructed one that when brought to mind, invokes the likeness of the Marlborough Man or James Bond or a military soldier exemplifying qualities of strength and confidence and leadership. But ultimately, when we wash away the cultural images, we are left with mere language that has been arbitrarily prescribed to an ideal.
