The Ant in the Turtles Shell
Recognized as one of the greatest books in American Literature, John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath is set in the 1930s southwest. Although the even chapters in this book are centered on the Joads, Steinbeck also tells the tale of all the migrant farmers collectively. Through the Joads, the migrant farmers, and the symbols Steinbeck includes, many important morals and lessons are brought up. The importance of family and togetherness are stressed throughout The Grapes of Wrath.
Chapter three opens to a turtle attempting to cross a highway. After overcoming the obstacles of climbing an embankment and a concrete wall, he now faced a new challenge. A red ant ran into the land turtles shell which obviously bothered him. All the parts of the turtle then came together and retreated inside the shell, which would crush the red ant bothering the turtle. Each part of the turtle, the head, the legs and the tail represented an individual in a family or group.
