“ The Lottery” When one thinks of tradition, one usually think of customs and practices passed down for many years and generations. Many traditions may include the celebration of holidays and even birthdays. Traditions are often fun times were family and friends come together to enjoy what they love doing most. In the short story, “ The Lottery”, written by Shirley Jackson, tradition is viewed in a very disturbing way. Throughout “The Lottery”, tradition is demonstrated by the gathering in town, the elder‘s views and the dismantling black box. The gathering in town represents one theme of tradition. From the setting one would never know violence plays apart in this small village’s tradition. “The Lottery” takes place on the pleasant morning of June 27th. The sunny was shining and the atmosphere was peaceful. The children were playing, while gathering stones.
