The Kite Runner The Kite Runner is placed in Afghanistan and focuses on a boy named Amir. The novel, written by Khaled Hosseini, follows Amir from his childhood in a peaceful Afghanistan to his adulthood where Afghanistan is the headliner war-torn nation. In the beginning of his life, he struggles to please his father and is frustrated to find that where he always fails, his friend and servant Hassan succeeds splendidly. Hassan is always strong and courageous while Amir is quite the “wimp.” The novel explores these relationships between servant and master, in the metaphorical sense that one person is always dominant and one person is always weaker. However, it usually portrays these dominant and weak associations in the reverse of what is expected. Since the novel mostly deals with one-on-one person interaction, this overbearing theme is more easily emphasized. This same concept is portrayed in Hosseini’s second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, where the Islamic culture allows for the domination of women by men.
