Sandy shores and beaches are geological formations that consist of loose sediments which include sand, gravel and cobble. Waves and currents move the accumulated sediment constantly creating, eroding and changing the coastlines. Sandy beaches are high-energy environments where wave action is a vital factor in this ecosystem. Sandy beaches are described to stretch between two extremes, from where wave action is fierce and where wave action is relatively mild. When wave action is strong, the beaches usually have a gentle slope and the waves create a wide surf zone. The tide range is also usually large and as the tide rises and falls oxygen is pumped through the sand. In addition, the other extreme, where wave action is calmer, beaches usually have steeper slopes, which reflect the waves instead of dissipating their energy in the surf zone. Sandy beaches are found all over the New England shores. A couple local examples of well known sandy beaches are Misquamicut beach and Watch Hill beach.
