Masculinity vs. Femininity in Ernest Hemingway's Indian Camp Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Ernest Hemingway wrote the “Indian Camp,” which is a short story that shows how a father [doctor] tries to teach his son [Nick] about delivering babies as a physician. However, Nick is not that interested with his dad’s occupation and the doctor learns that sometimes things do not work out as planned. The purpose of this story is to show how in one scene a person can be masculine, but in another scene they become compassionate and become feminine. As the doctor and Nick arrive at the camp, the doctor mentions to Nick that an Indian woman is in labor and going to deliver a baby. Nick is not that interested in what is going on and just tells the doctor that he knows. The doctor, a little rattled by Nick’s brief statement, says, “You don’t know. Listen to me” (92). In this quote it shows the masculinity of the doctor. The doctor’s masculinity comes from the word, “listen,” which shows the strength and intelligence that the doctor has for his profession. He believes Nick has no clue about birth and he needs to listen to what his father is trying......
