Analysis of Various Readings There are a number of themes, motifs, and symbols within the three stories; “Big Two-Hearted River: Parts I & II”, “Battle Royal: Ch. 1 of Invisible Man”, and “Good Country People”. The stories cover a wide range of views and analogies about different subjects, such as racism, oppression, optimism, corruptness, and the American dream as seen through the eyes of suburban Americans, and African American minorities. Each story has an undertone or deeper meaning than the text itself, which allows the reader to come up with his or her own conclusions of what those implications are. Earnest Hemingway’s Big Two-Hearted River is a story about a soldier named Nick, who is on his way home from WWI. The story is filled with images of a war and the way some soldiers feel when returning from a war, such as the burned town. The town resembles the war tattered land in which Nick has just returned. He has left the war, but the burned town symbolizes the fact that his past has not left him. What Nick sees is symbolic of many soldiers who come back from war, wh......
