With daybreak yet to arrive one morning in 1967 Perry Loving, a white Virginian, and his African-American wife, Mildred Jeter, were woken by police and arrested. Their crime: being married. At the time in Virginia, as well as in fifteen other states, being involved in an interracial relationship was cause for incarceration. Forty years later the number of mixed race marriages has exploded from 300,000 to nearly 3 million. Is this massive increase in miscegenation indicative of a more forbearing society or is it simply the result of the nullification of antiquated legislation? Today, individuals engaged in biracial relationships no longer face legal consequences, however, the finger pointing and looks of inquiry from their fellow citizens remain inescapable. Despite the surge of interracial marriages, racial tensions have not completely subsided. Mixed race couples and their children continue to face objection and intolerance in todays society.
